The NPIRS database is the only national psychiatric inpatient database in Ireland. It was established in 1963, arising from the recommendations of the report of the Commission of Enquiry on Mental Illness (Department of Health, 1966). It has been maintained by the Medico-Social Research Board (MSRB) and subsequently, the Health Research Board (HRB), since 1971.

The National Drug Treatment Reporting System (NDTRS) is an epidemiological database on treated drug and alcohol misuse in Ireland. It was established in 1990 in the Greater Dublin Area and was extended in 1995 to cover all areas of the country.

The National Physical and Sensory Disability Database (NPSDD) is a set of information that outlines the specialised health services currently used or needed by people with physical or sensory disabilities. The database informs the regional and national planning of these services by providing information on trends in demographics, current service use and future service need.

WISDOM is a web-based mental health information system which records patient information about people presenting for treatment in inpatient and community-based mental health services. The development and implementation of the WISDOM system is a joint project between the Health Service Executive (HSE) and the Health Research Board (HRB). The information collected will be used to facilitate delivery of a quality mental health service

The Department of Health and Children and the Department of Justice, Equality and Law Reform have requested the Drug Misuse Research Division of the Health Research Board to establish a National Drug-Related Deaths Index in order to comply with Action 67 of Building on Experience: National Drugs Strategy 2001-2008.

The ESRI, in association with the Department of Health and Children, is engaged in the collection, processing and analysis of data for the Hospital In-Patient Enquiry Scheme (HIPE) which operates in all acute hospitals nationally. HIPE was started on a pilot basis in 1969 and then expanded and developed as a national database of coded discharge summaries from the 1970s onwards
