Irish Theatre Magazine was founded in Dublin in 1998 by Karen Fricker and Willie White, with the aim of providing in-depth critical coverage of Irish theatre. From modest beginnings it established itself as a quarterly cultural journal produced by a small team led by Editor-in-Chief (1998-2005) Karen Fricker, with Managing Editor Maura O’Keeffe and Art Director Susan Conley, generously funded by the Arts Council of Ireland/An Chomhairle Ealaíon.
Under its Editor, Helen Meany (2005-2011), and her colleagues, the magazine continued to expand its news and feature coverage of all aspects of the performing arts, while upholding its commitment to review every new Irish (professional) theatre production. Caroline Williams was Editor (2011-2013) and Peter Crawley was appointed Acting Editor in November 2013.
In 2009, ITM moved exclusively online, with a new website launched in September 2009. Future plans include the creation of a comprehensive ten-year digital archive of the publication, to provide a resource for researchers and scholars – and anyone interested in learning about key developments in an art form for which Ireland is internationally renowned.
Its growing readership includes theatre artists and professionals, as well as keen audience members.
