I’m organising a surprise party for my two nieces who are celebrating their Holy Confirmation today.
Theme Colours: Pink & White , white & silver or blue for a boy
Pick a theme. I picked pink and lilac.
Let people know well in advance of the date. If your family are artistic the kids could help you design a party invitation that can be emailed or printed and posted. You could also make a card invitation.

Tip: In rural Ireland we put balloons on the gate so parents can identify the party house for dropping off and collecting their kids.
I picked the pink and lilac theme as it is the two girls’ favour colours. I opted for a buffet as I do not know what time the 2 cousins are finishing in their churches and they are getting photographs on the convent grounds later. However, if it is your own child I think a BBQ and outdoor party is a great idea. Hire a bouncy castle and email or phone all family and friends and whoever wants to visit is welcome. You can control the costs and you have all your home comforts. Buy a gazebo, these are on sale in Argos and put your garden furniture or your kitchen table and chairs in the back garden. BBQs are cheap in Lidl, Aldi and Argos, starting at around €20 or you can also buy cheap tinfoil disposable ones. If you invest in a gazebo, BBQ and table and chairs instead of a holiday one year you will have these for every party for your kids and Communion and Confirmation parties too. You normally invite: grand parents, god parents, your siblings and their families and close family and friends. If it rains so what you can retreat into the kitchen or sitting room. They are often just showers anyway. Rent a few Disney DVDs just in case it rains as a plan B.
I have my cream gazebo and BBQ years because at the end of every summer, they are put away in a box in the shed. If you don’t have a shed put it in the attic or a safe place because the winds will rip it in the winter.
Make sure your lawn is cut and your garden looks at its best.
If you are a gardener you could beautiful pots of flowers around the gazebo and dress it up with balloons and a nice table cloth and cushions on the chairs. I have seen people add contrasting voiles and bows to the sides of the gazebo and beautiful fabrics and cushions and candles.
Dress up your gazebo

I have my freezer full so if it is a nice evening we might do a BBQ, it will depend if my two sisters have many other families to visit. I am doing a tea party.
I will also have their cards with money…obviously!!!It is a strange age, the kids are not teenagers and not small kids. They often want to buy iphones, iTunes, clothes etc It is safer to give them money and this allows them to buy their own gifts.

My girls loved their surprise party and we were blessed with a beautiful sunny day! We ate in the garden and afterwards we went for a walk to the beach and the girls went paddling. Afterwards the cousins played until dark and the adults sipped wine and chilled! I had strings of multi colour solar lights , like The Merries, light up the garden, in the dark for the kids and they loved them.
