Scandinavian crime writing in the UK | Ed Champion meets Sam Tanenhaus
The Age of Entanglement review

Scandinavian crime writing in the UK

In The Guardian John Crace considers the recent popularity of Scandinavian crime writing in the UK, in Move over, Ian Rankin.
       Among the points of interest:

“Larsson’s trilogy had been rejected by seven or eight British publishers by the time it got to me, I’m pleased to say,” MacLehose smiles.

As well he should; see also our review of The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

.

Edward Champion has a post up In Which I Talk with TanenhausThe New York Times Book Review-editor Sam Tanenhaus.
Among the points of interest (and disappointment):

He did express some regret that he hadn’t given enough space to translated titles, but he had no answers as to how or when he would do this in the future. The sense I got was that Tanenhaus was completely reliant on his editors’ respective judgments and that this judgment permitted him to do what he needed to do in an executive capacity, but prevented him from plunging first-hand into some of today’s realities.

The most recent addition to the complete review is our review of Louisa Gilder’s book about When Quantum Physics was Reborn, The Age of Entanglement.
Coincidentally, the book of papers discussing John S. Bell (a central figure in Gilder’s book) and his work,
Quantum Reflections

— which we reviewed nearly a decade ago –, is just out in paperback.

Use Your Public Library

Overview of library services

Library Authorities

Public library services are provided by library authorities, typically the local county council or corporation.

There are 32 such separate library services in the country:

  • 4 services are run by City Councils (Cork, Dublin, Limerick, and Waterford);
  • 27 are run by County Councils;
  • and 1 (in Tipperary, where there are 2 County Councils) is a joint libraries committee.

These Library Authorities operate independently and some polices and practices vary from county to county.

The Branch Library network

Between them the 32 library authorities operate 353 branch libraries. They also provide library services in hospitals, schools, prisons, day care centres, parish halls and other community service points.

Some library authorities operate mobile libraries which serve neighbourhood housing, rural areas and areas of small population.

Opening Hours

Opening hours vary throughout the country but almost half of the branch libraries are open between 30 and 54 hours a week, while 182 are open between 10 and 29 hours per week. The improvement in opening hours is a key issue arising from the Branching Out report. The hours of opening of individual branches are set by the library authorities.

Services Provided

Although there are differences between library services and individual branch libraries, public libraries generally provide:
lending services (fiction and non-fiction); children’s services; Reference and General Information Services; Local Studies services; public Internet access; Self-directed Learning.

Collections

There are currently around 13 million items in stock in the public libraries in Ireland, and almost 14.5 million items are issued each year. In addition to books, this stock includes manuscripts, prints and drawings, compact discs, CD-Roms, DVDs, cassette tapes, and videos.

Expenditure

The estimated current expenditure on public libraries in 2008 is €130.5 million, or €30.78 per capita.

Library authorities will spend an estimated €14.8 million on stocking public libraries with books and other materials in 2008. Since 1998 the Department of the Environment and Local Government has provided €73.2 million (as at December 2005) in capital grants for the construction and leasing of new buildings, automation, transport and the stocking and fitting out of new and refurbished libraries.

The Department of Education and Science pays €4.52 per capita to library authorities for the provision of services to primary schools. The balance of costs for the schools service is borne by the library authorities.

Staffing

There are approximately 1,649 staff working in public library services in Ireland. Staff work at a range of positions – attendants, library assistants, senior library assistants, librarians, executive librarians, and county/city librarians. Some 20% of staff work in positions which require a professional qualification in librarianship.

Computerisation

All public library authorities have, or are currently implementing, computerised library management systems, providing library users with computer access to the catalogue. An increasing number of libraries are now making their catalogues available over the Internet.

Membership and usage of Public Libraries

In 2005 (most recent figures available), there were 778,421 registered members in the public library system, equivalent to 20% of the population.

Membership figures alone do not reflect the increasing level of usage by adults of the reference, information and other services in public libraries, such as local history and exhibitions.

A survey carried out in 2007 revealed that there are over 14 million visits to Irish public libraries each year. A TNSmrbi survey, commissioned in 2003, puts the level of usage at 36%, with over two-thirds of the population having been a member of a public library at some point

Verdict: I Love 10/10

Protect your work at home and damage from lost or viruses

 CD cdsfloppy-discfloppy disc

Back up your Data

Save all your data from viruses and pc damage by creating copies. My tip is to save little and often your emails, homework, projects, dairies etc on cd-rw. With a cd-rw you can write  and edit many times on the cd. A ordinary cd allows you to write material only once on it. For smaller blocks of info you could use a floppy disc.If you need extra storage you can always buy in Currys or PC Pro an external storage device. On your laptop save file as A drive for floppy disc or onto your d or e drive whatever your cd drive is called. Happy writing.

If you love books, you’ll love the new Reader from Sony. Invented especially for book lovers, Reader is the best way to enjoy the new generation of electronic books (or “eBooks”). Slim and compact, it lets you store and take stacks of books with you wherever you go. It’s as simple and absorbing as reading a real paper book. from Sony

One thing’s instantly apparent when you take the Sony Reader from its box – the Japanese giant has hit the bull’s eye when it comes to design. The Sony Reader looks fantastic, with the kind of minimalist style that wouldn’t be out of place in a Terence Conran design studio. The Reader itself is finished in matte silver, with contrasting darker silver buttons and controls. At first glance, it looks like there are far too many buttons squeezed into the reader, but once you start using it, you’ll realise that the controls are just about perfect.

With dimensions of 175 x 122 x 7.6mm (HxWxD), the Reader is very slim, and even when shrouded in its protective case it’s only the size of a slim notepad. Although the case, which resembles a book sleeve, isn’t made from genuine leather, it has a quality feel to it. Sony has also thought hard about the usability of the Reader while in its sleeve, making sure that the device can be easily read when placed on a desk or table, without having to remove it from its sheath.

Of course the highlight of the Reader is the 6in screen, which you’ll be spending a great deal of time looking at. At this point I should probably point out that anyone who prefers reading ink on paper, to reading text on a screen should not just dismiss the Sony Reader; in fact you’re in for something of a revelation. You see the screen on the Reader isn’t a standard LCD, like you’d find on most mobile devices. No, what you’ve got here is the Holy Grail of electronic literature – digital ink on digital paper. If you think that I’m just spouting Sony’s marketing line, believe me when I say that this device has to be seen to be believed.

Amazon’s Kindle V Sony ereader

Wednesday, January 7, 2009, The Irish Times

A year later, Amazon launched the Kindle. It looks quite similar and has an E-Ink screen, but there are two differences. First, the Kindle links to Amazon’s online store and there are 145,000 titles available to download. As well as books, readers can subscribe to daily newspapers and blogs, which makes the Kindle a more useful device in everyday life.

Second, Amazon came up with a clever way of linking the Kindle to its content. Each Kindle is connected to a 3G mobile network, so books and newspapers can be downloaded within a minute. If you subscribe to the New York Times, for example, it arrives wirelessly at night, ready to read on the morning commute.

This enhances the usefulness of the Kindle. “The real change is that you can buy a book any time and anywhere. It is like having an airport book stall with you 24 hours a day,” says Mark Mahaney, a Citigroup internet analyst.

The fact that the Kindle is smoothly connected in this way is deliberate. Amazon is very good at finding ways to make it easy to purchase things, from its 1-Click online buying system to Amazon Prime, under which US customers pay $79 a year for free delivery of their orders. Jeff Bezos, Amazon’s geeky chief executive, says it tries to minimise “cognitive overhead” for people who want to buy something, which I believe means ensuring they do not need to think too hard.

Anyway, it works. To the surprise of sceptics about e-book readers, the Kindle is a hit. Amazon has not released figures but TechCrunch, the technology website, reported last week that it has sold 240,000 units, putting it on track to match iPod first-year sales of 360,000 in 2001.
